What I do

What I do is graphic design for electronic media. My first love is video, but I also work in multimedia. I started in the biz in 1982. At the time, I was a creative writing major at San Francisco State University. This was my second stab at college life, having previously been enrolled as a fine arts major at SUNY New Paltz. I happened upon an opportunity to learn what was then a very new technology: computer graphics. I spent a summer learning the Dubner CBG-2 at One Pass Film and Video, while completing an independent study in the Latin American Novel. One Pass gave me a job, and Carlos Fuentes was relegated to the bookshelf while I learned video post-production the only way you can: by doing.

Since that time I've learned a lot of new software, hardware, techniques and technologies. My work has encompassed broadcasting, advertising, corporate communications, interactive videodisc, multimedia, interactive television, and most recently, the world wide web. I've been art director and designer on many projects, but I always welcome the opportunity to work on a team, or to learn a few tricks from someone else.

I love to design, but I am able to take on many responsibilities that go beyond designing. I've started two art departments from scratch and overhauled a third, specified equipment, hired, trained, and supervised personnel, established graphics standards and production procedures, and managed projects from beginning to end. I've written scripts and produced videos. So I can wear a lot of hats (although the red beret is still my favorite).

Currently, I am designing in my own Macintosh-based studio. I have also been spending many hours learning Discreet Logic's Flame and Flint, and Chyron's Liberty, and look forward to doing more jobs on those systems. Most recently I have been learning to design web sites- this is only my second, but there will be more to come!
